For the foreseeable future all posts here will be set in the world of my fiction novel, He Walks With The Dead - coming out towards the end of the year. Over on Substack, I will post one story a week - every Sunday at 9 AM ET. Some will be short stories of Khaled himself. Some will be through the eyes of other people and their experiences set in his world. Some will be chapters that didn’t make it into the final version (I cut approximately 50,000 words from version 1 to version 13 alone!) Some will be about the world itself and my reflections on writing inside this war-torn world. Some might feel very real. Everything is fiction. Everything is inspired by what we humans do to each other. Fiction is the truth that hides in the seams of our world and shadows of our mind. Welcome to the seams. Welcome to the shadows.
To kick us off I will reshare the first chapter. The original version was written almost three years ago but this is V14 - and will likely be tweaked more before the book is published. It has changed a lot since the original (tighter, punchier, starker prose) but remains true to the origins of the story and the first thoughts that made me write the story of Khaled.
Chapter 1: The Dead
He walks with the dead.
They walk with him wherever he goes. To the clerk at the desk, he is Khaled. To the signatures on official paper, he is Investigator Kanaan. To the uniforms in the hallway, he is Inspector Khaled.
But to the dead he is the one who listens.
He carries more than their names. He carries their last rooms. Their last breaths. The last thing they saw before the world narrowed into a single point and went dark. They follow him without footsteps. They press against him without hands.
They do not accuse.
They remind.
Of what waits unfinished. Of the questions that have no mouths left to ask them. They move through him like wind through broken windows.
He does not resent them.
They have nowhere else to go. And they do not know how to give peace back.
Not all the dead come to him.
Some leave quietly. Illness. Age. The slow betrayal of the body. He sees their stillness but he does not hear them. Life ended them, not intent.
They leave him to sleep.
But the others. Those taken by a hand. By a voice that said now. Those come to him.
They do not ask for revenge. They ask for something smaller and heavier.
Knowing.
Someone who can name the face that leaned too close. Someone who can follow the thread back through fear and money and power and say: this is where it began.
They want to be known.
And he is the one who knows.
When the chain is complete and the last link visible, they loosen their grip. Not completely. Never completely. But enough.
Each one leaves a little weight behind. Almost a soft imprint. He feels it in his shoulders. In the way he sits. He does not measure it. He only knows that when one weight lifts to a lightness, there is space for another.
So he goes. From one door to the next. From one body to the next.
The hunt continues. The listener continues.
But not anymore.
Now the dead do not arrive one by one. They arrive together. Not in whispers but in waves. Their silence is no longer contained. It spills into the streets.
So they scream. And they search. And they follow him.
He does not need photographs anymore. He does not need files.
He sees them without looking. The city itself carries their sound.
He was once the one who followed the thread. Who brought knowing into dark rooms.
Not now.
Now the rooms are too many. The threads too tangled. The silence too loud.
It is everywhere.
Because this is a city of war.
I will repost the Substack post here a day or so later. Feel free to go straight to Substack for these future posts: https://henkcampher.substack.com/
